Measure the area that needs coverage and trace its contour onto a clear template, then note your hair direction and part. Accurate measurements matter most for custom orders, where the base is cut to your template. For stock systems, you match to the nearest standard size.

What you need

A sheet of clear plastic film or cling wrap
A fine permanent marker
Tape
A mirror, or a second person to help

Step by step

Trim the area short. The hair under the system should be short so the template lies flat against the scalp.
Cover the area. Lay the plastic film over the area of loss and tape it so it sits smooth without shifting.
Trace the coverage zone. Mark the outline of the area you want the system to cover, following your natural hairline at the front.
Measure length and width. Note the longest and widest points of the traced area in inches or centimeters.
Mark hair direction and part. Draw arrows for the direction the hair falls and mark where you part it.
Note the front contour. Indicate how far forward the hairline should sit and its shape.

Important constraints

Measure on a flat, short surface — long hair under the template distorts the outline.
For custom orders, precision here drives the fit of the finished base.
